FA TROPHY SUCCESS IN SOUTH GLOUCESTERSHIRE

FA TROPHY SUCCESS IN SOUTH GLOUCESTERSHIRE

Hampton & Richmond advanced to the FA Trophy third round with a 2-0 victory over error-strewn Yate Town at the South West Interiors Stadium.

The Beavers took a second half lead after substitute Mauro Vilhete’s effort was turned into his own net by James Byrne.

Alan Julian’s side killed off the game after Vilhete caught Yate goalkeeper, Aaron Sainsbury, in possession before firing home from close range.

Both sides posed a threat in the early stages, and while Hampton & Richmond were confident in possession, the home side looked dangerous on the counter-attack.

Alfie Williams won a free-kick on the edge of the Yate area, but Alex Wall fired his low effort straight into the Bluebells’ wall.

The away side came close from a well-worked corner as Kristian Campbell headed James Roberts’ near post delivery into the side netting.

Clear-cut chances were sporadic in the first half and the sides went in deservedly goalless at the break.

Wall continued to cause problems for the Beavers and drew a fine reaction save from Sainsbury early into the second half.

The National League South side began to tighten their grip on proceedings and enjoyed prolonged spells in possession in the second period.

Hampton & Richmond took a fortuitous lead in the 73rd minute, after Vilhete’s effort was headed by Byrne past his own helpless goalkeeper.

Darren Mullings’ side pushed for an equaliser and came close as Marlon Jackson almost netted from inside the box.

James Taylor was a calm and composed figure at the back for the away side and proved a tricky opponent for Yate to beat.

Sainsbury had a moment to forget as he was caught dwindling in possession by Vilhete, who fired home after a clear run on goal in the 79th minute.

The Beavers saw out a relatively comfortable 2-0 victory in what was the first ever meeting between the two sides.

Hampton & Richmond advanced to the 3rd round of the competition, due to be played on the 7th December, but Yate can hold their heads high after a spirited performance against higher opposition.

Next up for the Beavers is a return to league action this Saturday at home to Aveley FC. Tickets for the match can be purchased HERE
