We spoke to Hampton & Richmond manager Mel Gwinnett to catch up about the weekend's performance, and look ahead to a trip to Rayners Lane in the Middlesex Senior Cup.
After a gritted away performance earned the Beavers a 1-2 victory at in-form Chippenham Town, we asked Mel for his final thoughts. "As I said on Saturday, we knew going into it that it would be a difficult game." He said. "They are a good side, a really good side, and it was important that when we got chances we took them. Yes it feels good to score early, but a game is 90 minutes and your have to work hard for the full 90, which the players did."
Turning attention to the midweek game against Rayners Lane, Mel stressed his excitement for the academy players who will be taking centre stage. "We’ve had a lot of our academy players training with the first team throughout the season. It’s a great squad of players to learn from and develop, which is a huge part of our club ethos. It’s going to be a real test for the young players, but an invaluable one."
"With the pace of the league, our position in it, and the size of my first team squad, we can't afford to risk anyone in midweek." He continued, "There's a few knocks from the weekend too, so we need to ensure we protect our players as much as possible."
