FA Trophy Clash: Beavers vs Spennymoor – Match Preview

By Calum Preston Kelly

There’s FA Trophy action at Beveree Stadium this Saturday afternoon, as Hampton & Richmond welcome National League North outfit Spennymoor Town to Beveree Stadium for our 4th Round cup encounter, with a place in the last 16 at stake.

It will be the first time the two sides have ever faced each other.

Who are they:

Spennymoor Town FC is a football club based in County Durham, England. They play their home matches at The Brewery Field and are managed by Graeme Lee. The club has an interesting story to tell, as Spennymoor Town is the result of a merge between Spennymoor United and Evenwood Town. This took place in 2005 after United dissolved, when financial issues led to unfulfilled league fixtures and resignation from the Northern Premier League. Evenwood were also close to going out of business at the time, and so the two clubs decided to merge and form the phoenix club Spennymoor Town.

The Moors started out in the Northern League Division Two in 2005/06 and enjoyed a successful period of four promotions in 10 years, which culminated in achieving Step 2 status in 2017 with promotion to the National League North. They have remained there ever since, losing the Play-Off Final on penalties to Chorley in 2018/19. Otherwise, they have finished around mid-table in each of their seasons in Step 2, finishing in 9th place in 2023/24.

The club also won the FA Vase in 2012/13, and the Durham County Challenge Cup in 2011/12.

The form guide:

Spennymoor currently sit in 13th place in the National League North, with 32 points from 24 matches. Lee’s side have been hard to beat of late, with only one defeat in 11 in all competitions, six of those matches ending in draws. That was the case last time out, as they drew 1-1 away at Scarborough Athletic on New Year's Day.

The Beavers have been on similarly solid form over the winter period, also boasting only one defeat in 11, winning six of those. Something has to give this Saturday though, as two form teams face off and only one can be victorious in TW12. There are no replays in the FA Trophy this season, so all will be decided on the day.

The Beavers saw off Yate Town 2-0 in Round 2, then Hashtag United were beaten 3-0 at The Bev last month. Spennymoor beat South Shields 2-1, then overcame Alfreton Town 1-0 to reach Round 4.

Danger men:

Club legend striker Glen Taylor will be one to watch out for, the Moors frontman is closing in on 200 goals for the club since joining in 2017. He has found the net nine times so far this campaign.

Midfielder Rob Ramshaw has struck five goals so far, the fans’ favourite having also served the club for over eight years. He scored the winner in the Play-Off Final against Stourbridge in 2017, a goal which earnt the club a place in the National League North.

But Spennymoor were dealt a bitter blow to begin 2025, as top scorer Isaac Fletcher completed a move to League 2 Barrow for an undisclosed fee. The 22-year-old had bagged 13 goals from midfield and will no doubt be missed.

As for The Beavers, top scorer James Roberts has 11 goals to his name, while Jake Gray and Mauro Vilhete have both also notched 10 goal contributions with goals and assists. But we know that Spennymoor should expect danger from all areas of the pitch on Saturday.

Historic encounters:

Hampton & Richmond have never played Spennymoor Town in their 20-year history, so this weekend will be the first time the sides ever face off!

This is not one to miss on Saturday, as The Moors come all the way down from Durham to face Alan Julian’s Beavers at The Bev. Tickets can be purchased HERE.
