Beavers and Rebels Clash in Thrilling 2-2 Draw

Hampton & Richmond played out a 2-2 draw with Slough Town, with the Rebels equalising through a penalty moments after the Beavers missed a spot kick.

John Gilbert and Slavi Spasov scored for Slough while goals from Kristian Campbell and James Roberts ensured Hampton extended their unbeaten run at home to six games.

The Beavers replace Hornchurch in 12th after they were defeated at home to Chippenham Town in the National League South. Slough remain 11th.

It took just over a minute for the visitors to get the first goal, as Gilbert was passed the ball from a short corner, drove at goal and unleashed a strike across Ted Curd into the back of the net.

The home side responded positively with Jack Taylor and James Roberts coming close to an equaliser in the early exchanges.

The goal eventually came in the 26th minute thanks to Campbell, who nodded in Alfie Williams’ inswinging corner kick from the right.

Roberts put his side 2-1 up before the break, latching onto Josh Keeya’s dinked through ball on the left wing and slotting past Charlie Horlock.

The finish marked the forward’s 11th goal of the campaign and ninth in the league, retaining his position as the Beavers’ top scorer.

Neither side was able to capitalise on half chances after the interval, with the Rebels’ high line proving tricky for Hampton & Richmond to penetrate.

That was until the 74th minute when Mauro Vilhete burst through one-on-one with the keeper but was hauled down by Scott Davies and awarded a penalty.

Vilhete, clearly full of confidence after his man-of-the-match performance against Chelmsford, attempted a panenka, but Horlock read his intentions and caught the ball comfortably.

The referee pointed to the spot at the opposite end four minutes later when David Ogbonna was fouled in the box after a clever run.

Spasov convincingly dispatched his penalty into the bottom right corner to level the game with just over ten minutes of normal time remaining.

Each side had a shot blocked and cleared off the line in the game’s dying embers, and had to settle for a point apiece.

Beavers boss Alan Julian was disappointed his team didn’t secure all three points: “When you’re 2-1 up and have opportunities to win the game, you feel a bit frustrated that two points have slipped away.

“We controlled the game going into half time, and I felt we were in control in the second half, but we didn’t kill the game. We take the point and move on.”

Julian’s friendship off the pitch with Rebels’ player-manager Davies is well documented, but it was set aside for 90 minutes on Saturday.

“I was shouting for him to be sent off for the penalty! I’m sure he’d have done the same if it was me bringing someone down.

“I didn’t realise an attempt to play the ball isn’t a red card, so no problem.”

Davies currently holds the distinction of being the highest-level player-manager in English football, occupying a rare role in the modern game.

The Beavers are on a good run of form, winning seven of their last 11 games and losing just once.

They visit ninth-placed Farnborough on Boxing Day, before returning to the Beveree Stadium on New Year's Day to host high-flying Dorking Wanderers.
